"With 1 in 4 people reported to be experiencing mental ill health at any time in the UK, there has never been more of a need for increased mental health awareness."

Educating ourselves about mental health is so important. It helps us build awareness to help ourselves and others, manage our own stress levels, spot the signs of mental ill health and gives us confidence to talk openly, honestly and without judgement about a subject that is still considered a taboo and shrouded with stigma.

Many internal and external factors can cause mental ill health but the stigma associated with mental health remains a major obstacle to the effective diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. This can prevent people talking to colleagues, friends, family or managers at work about their problems because they fear discrimination. It may also even prevent them from acknowledging to themselves that they have a problem.

Mental ill health covers a variety of different conditions, ranging from depression, anxiety and stress-related disorders to schizophrenia and personality disorders.

We all have mental health. The term ‘mental health’ is not just a reference to mental health issues, but good health too. Just like physical health, we can have mental good or ill health. In fact, our physical and mental health are closely intertwined to the point that ‘mental health’ is in fact just our ‘health’.

I am passionate about the subject of mental health and have my own personal experiences of mental ill health and recovery. That is why I dedicate my learning and coaching to the subject and implement skills for good mental health support into everything I do.

How can you join me to become more mental health savvy?

My book 'The Three Taboos: Cancer, Grief and Mental Health' focusses on opening up the conversations around mental health and ways that we can support ourselves and others.

It is accompanied by my Podcast 'The Three Taboos: Cancer, Grief and Mental Health' where I chat about subjects surrounding mental health and welcome guests who talk about their lived experiences.

You can also join my Three Taboos Facebook Group where we actively start and host the discussions about mental health.

The best thing we can do is to become more aware of mental health and with my downloadable mental health awareness course you can learn about mental health, stress, how to spot the signs of mental ill health and how to listen and talk about mental health. The course takes under two hours and the benefits are huge. It's delivered in three video modules with workbook activities and quizzes and it is a great way to start to get to grips with the subject of mental health in your own time and in yoru own safe surroundings to support yourself and others.

Want to bring a little more happiness to your life?

I'm a believer that whilst we treat the symptoms of mental ill health, often with medication, we should in fact be treating the causes of our mental ill health through conversation and a variety of helpful coping methods. This is what I focus on with my coaching and training and it is my mantra of #createmyhappy that helped me recover from mental ill health without medication.

We can choose happiness and by making that choice we can help ourselves to get mentally strong.
